South Carolina (Yes, South Carolina) Governor: We’ve Never ‘Passed Laws Based On Race Or Religion’

Republican Governor Nikki Haley is wrong, very, very wrong.

It’s been a rough 24 hours for South Carolina Republican Governor Nikki Haley.

She delivered probably the best Republican response to any of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Addresses, denouncing hate and bigotry from her party’s extremists, like Donald Trump. And for that, was verbally and digitally annihilated by a great many right wing pundits – not far right, but mainstream Fox News right. To add insult to injury, she was praised by many on the left.

But Haley stood strong.

Wednesday afternoon, Haley spoke at an education event, and said something incredibly false, and, from a first-generation Indian-American and sitting governor of a conservative Southern state that was the first to secede from the Union, outlandish.

“We’ve never, in the history of this country, passed any laws or done anything based on race or religion,” Haley said, according to MSNBC’s Jeremy Slevin.

Immediately, many jumped on Haley, and rightly so.

Slevin also got a bit of push back, namely from Vox, which agreed Haley was wrong, but given the context, not extremely wrong, so Slevin tweeted the quote in context:
