Actor George Takei, who was in a U.S. World War II internment camp for people of Japanese descent when he was a child, offers strong condemnation of Donald Trump’s policies.
George Takei several years ago spoke of the time when he was five years old, living in Los Angeles, military personnel walked up his driveway and took his family into custody, placing them in an internment camp because they were of Japanese descent, even though they were U.S. citizens. Takei shared that piece of his past in a video offering support for the re-election of President Barack Obama.
Today, Takei reminded fans of what it was like to be thrown in an internment camp, speaking to MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts about Donald Trump‘s latest “policy” announcement, banning all Muslims from entering the United States.
“It’s ironic that he made that comment on December 7, Pearl Harbor Day, the very event that put us in those internment camps,” Takei observed.
“In the 1980’s Congress organized a commission to look into the reasons why that internment happened,” Takei, who testified at a congressional hearing, said. “They found that it was three things that brought that about. One was racial hysteria, second was war hysteria, and third was failure of political leadership.”
“Donald Trump is the perfect example of that failure,” Takei charged.Â
“What Donald Trump is talking about is something that’s going to make his logo, ‘America: Disgraced Again,'” Takei warned.
Takei also talks about his Broadway show, Allegiance, which is based on his experiences as a prisoner in a Japanese internment camp.
