Bigger Than Trump: 9 Things About Martin Shkreli That Happened Today After He Was Arrested
Infamous price gouging pharmaceutical CEO Martin Shkreli was arrested this morning. Here are nine interesting or weird things that happened as a result.
Touring Pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli, the infamous former hedge fund manager who jacked up an AIDS and cancer drug 5500% only to admit he wished he had raised the price even more, was arrested on securities fraud charges this morning.
Shkreli has been dubbed the “most hated man in America,” so when news broke of his arrest, the Internet exploded.
The last thing anyone wants to do – or should do – is glorify a man who has zero sympathy for people who need the lifesaving drugs his companies make, charging 55 times what they used to cost, but folks on social media sure had a good time today vilifying and mocking him. The word “karma” was used a lot today.
Shkreli, if only for a day, became bigger than Donald Trump:

One of the biggest questions surrounding Shkreli was not, “How did the FBI catch him?,” or “How long might he go to jail for?,” it was, “What happens to his Wu-Tang Clan album that he paid $2 million for recently?”
One journalist actually filed a Freedom of Information request:
Just FOIA’d the FBI to try to get the Wu-Tang Clan album from Martin #Shkreli – Let’s party! pic.twitter.com/Dd0nxU1DwH

And in a hilarious tweet no one would ever expect – complete with a “#Breaking” hashtag, the FBI decided to answer that question directly:
#Breaking no seizure warrant at the arrest of Martin Shkreli today, which means we didn’t seize the Wu-Tang Clan album.
— FBI New York (@NewYorkFBI) December 17, 2015
That tweet was favorited almost 7000 times and retweeted over 11,000 times.
We learned that Shkreli lost $26 million when the price of his company’s stock tanked after news broke he was arrested, and we learned that Shkreli totally misrepresented the assets of his failed hedge fund, MSMB Capital Management, claiming it had $35 million when it only had $1000:

This, for some strange reason:

There’s now a crowdfunding site campaign to raise money for him – totally fake, probably, so don’t donate:
Along with a Free Martin Shkreli Twitter account, again, probably not his:

And, lastly, this:

Oh. Shkreli made bail today. $5 million. He’s free, for now, probably listening to his Wu-Tang Clan album.
