Pastor Says AIDS Is ‘God’s Retribution.’ (He’s Also Hosting 3 GOP Presidential Candidates This Week)

Three GOP presidential candidates are speaking at a conference hosted by a pastor who just called AIDS “God’s retribution.”

Kevin Swanson is a right-wing radio host, pastor, and anti-LGBT activist. Right Wing Watch calls him “one of the most virulently anti-LGBT activists out there,” and notes Swanson “has defended Uganda’s kill-the-gays bill, warned that the Girl Scouts, women’s soccer and movies like “Frozen” turn girls into lesbians, and accused gay people of causing devastating floods and hurricanes.”

Last month, Swanson waged war on the federal government’s support of people living with HIV/AIDS. Railing against made up numbers he claims are how much the government spends to help people with HIV/AIDS, he claimed they are “especially favored by the government and given a fair amount of support for their homosexual activity and the disease that seems to accommodate their activity.” And then he then called the disease “God’s retribution.”

Right Wing Watch reports “Swanson added that gay people should be glad that God punished them with HIV/AIDS, explaining that it is a sign of ‘God’s kindness’ as it gives them time to think things over and renounce homosexuality, thus saving them from Hell.”

“It’s also a wakeup call,” he said. “Be thankful that God doesn’t kill you all at once. He slows you down for a moment, he makes you sick, he gives you a heads-up.”

This weekend, according to a press release, Swanson’s right wing religious conference, the National Religious Liberties Conference, will be held in Des Moines, Iowa. He says Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, and Bobby Jindal are scheduled to speak, and back in June claimed that Ben Carson was as well, although his press release last week didn’t include Carson.

On the conference’s website, Swanson at one point asked potential attendees, “Are you ready to face persecution for opposing the homosexual agenda?”
