The pastor who hosted three Republican presidential candidates this weekend had strong words about “Harry Potter” and “How To Train Your Dragon.”
Pastor Kevin Swanson, who has repeatedly called for gays to be put to death, per his interpretation of the Bible, this weekend hosted “Freedom 2015,” the National Religious Liberty Conference. Republican presidential candidates Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, and Bobby Jindal all shared his stage and spoke to the largely Christian evangelical audience, wholly ignoring Swanson’s violent anti-gay hate speech.
During one segment of Swanson’s speeches, after demanding America repent for abortion, he demanded America repent for the homosexuality of characters in “Harry Potter” and “How to Train Your Dragon.”
“America, repent of your rebellion against God!,” Swanson cried out. “America, repent of stumbling the little ones! America, repent of ‘Harry Potter’! America, repent of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’!”
Of course, technically, “Harry Potter” is of British descent, so it’s a bit unfair to blame America for Dumbledore being gay. And, of course, there’s actually no blame necessary for anyone being gay, since, unlike religious extremism, homosexuality isn’t a choice.
And, of course, Swanson again called for the death of gay people, or, some people, since his rambling speech makes exactly whose necks “a millstone be hanged around” a bit unclear.
“America,” Swanson continued, “repent that Dumbledore emerged as a homosexual mentor for Harry Potter, that Hiccup’s mentor in ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ emerged as a homosexual himself in order that history might repeat itself one more time, in order that little six- and seven- and eight-year-olds might stumble, in order that tens of millions of parents, it would be better that a millstone be hanged around their neck and they be drowned at the bottom of the sea than that there would be so many people stumbling so many children in public schools, in movie theaters, in homes in which children are raised to be stumbled by the Dumbledores and by the mentors of Hiccup in ‘How to Train Your Dragon’!”
Swanson concludes that “if God won’t judge this nation, he’ll need to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.”
