Breaking: Officer Who Shot Laquan McDonald 16 Times in 14 Seconds Gets Bail

Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke can be released on bail after a judge set bond for the man who killed a 17-year old.

A Cook County judge has set bail at $1.5 million for Jason Van Dyke, the Chicago police officer who shot and killed Laquan McDonald last year. The video of the shooting, kept away from the public for 400 days until an independent journalist’s court case made it public, sparked outrage last week, and calls for senior Chicago elected officials to resign.

Judge Donald Panarese Jr. set bond after viewing that horrific video. Van Dyke had been in jail since last Tuesday.

The Chicago Tribune reports the Chicago Police Department “suspended Van Dyke without pay last week after the murder charge was filed. Van Dyke had been placed on paid desk duty after the shooting.”

Prosecutors had asked the judge to hold Van Dyke without bail.
