Baptists Pass Resolution Suggesting Same-Sex Marriage A Threat To Religious Liberty

At this week’s Alabama Baptists Convention meeting, same-sex marriage was suggested as a threat to religious liberty.

This week the Alabama Baptist Convention voted to list same-sex marriage in a resolution calling for the defense of religious liberty, suggesting marriage equality is a threat.

The roots of religious liberty in the United States of America began with the practices of religious persecution in Europe,” the resolution begins. “For Christians, religious liberty is more than a religious tenet or principle, it is a matter of conscience and obedience to Jesus Christ our Lord,” it continues.

The very next statement mentions the Supreme Court’s Obergefell decision, stating it “effectively redefined marriage, departing from the centuries-old understanding of marriage as practiced by civilized people — that is, between one man and one woman.”

The resolution calls Obergefell “a turning point in history and also in the potential interpretation of American constitutional law in regards to our First Amendment freedoms.”

“RESOLVED,” it concludes, “That the messengers to the Alabama Baptist State Convention, meeting in Daphne, Alabama, November 17-18, 2015, reaffirm our stated belief that American citizens have historic and constitutional rights to exercise religious liberty.”

It’s unclear how the Alabama Baptist Convention thinks same-sex marriage is a threat to their religious liberty, or why they need a resolution to protect them from it.
