Watch: Real Gay Dads And Their Son Featured In ‘Star Wars’ Commercial For Campbell’s

The heartwarming new “Star Wars” Campbell’s soup commercial shows two gay dads doing their best impersonation of Darth Vader.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens doesn’t hit theaters for another two months, but hype for the upcoming movie was strong even before the first teaser trailer was released last November. Now, a new commercial by Campbell’s incorporates the hit movie series while also featuring LGBT families.

The new video, sure to go viral, starts with a father feeding his son a spoon of Campbell’s “Star Wars” inspired soup while saying, “Cooper, I am your father,” in his best Darth Vader voice.

The ad then shows the boy’s other father interrupting, “No, no, no! I am your father,” while also feeding their son a spoon full of soup.

“That’s gotta be the worst Vader ever,” the first father responds, and the two of them laugh together at the poor impersonation.

Yin Woon Rani, Campbell’s VP-marketing activation, said the company wanted to show a diverse mix of American families, and according to Advertising Age, this cute commercial is part of Campbell Soup’s first major brand push in five years. It features the real family of actors David Monahan and Larry Sullivan.

This is not the first time Campbell has created an LGBT friendly ad. In 2009, the American Family Association accused the company of embracing the “homosexual agenda” after they placed an ad in The Advocate. That ad showed two lesbian parents and their son with Campbell’s Swanson line of broth.

While there are no openly LGBT characters in the movies yet, Paul S. Kemp’s novel, Star Wars: Lords of the Sith, introduced the first official gay character into the universe last April. The character was Moff Delian Mors, a lesbian Imperial officer who felt adrift after her wife was killed in an accident.

Also, the Star Wars universe progressed even further in September when author, Chuck Wendig, introduced the first major gay character, the Imperial turncoat Sinjir Rath Velus. Sinjir is an Imperial loyalty officer who joins the Rebellion after witnessing the battle on Endor.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18, 2015.
