Family Research Council Pushing Ridiculous Anti-LGBT ‘Bathroom Bill’ Ad (Video)

The Family Research Council is pushing a fear-mongering ad showing a toilet in an effort to get Houstonians to vote against a nondiscrimination bill.

Hiding behind a group they are calling Faith Family Freedom Fund, the Family Research Council’s Super PAC released a fear-mongering ad opposing the passage of Houston’s nondiscrimination law, known as HERO, or Proposition1.

“If Proposition 1 passes, you could be fined up to $5,000 for declining to participate in a same-sex wedding or simply objecting to a man using a woman’s bathroom,” FRC’s ad claims. “$5,000 … down the tubes.”

Of course, a transgender woman needing to use the restroom is not “a man using a woman’s bathroom,” and religious organizations like churches have First Amendment protections and are exempt from “participating” in a same-sex wedding, but don’t expect FRC to mention that fact.

The Sun Times notes FRC’s ad “continues to play off of fears that the bill enables sexual assault of women despite there being no evidence that it does.”

“Don’t allow the government to flush your money or religious liberties,” the ad pleads, misleading voters.

Houston is the largest city in the U.S. that does not have a nondiscrimination ordinance.

By the way, HERO opponents are focusing in on one tiny part of the law. Here’s what voters are being asked to decide:

“Are you in favor of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance, Ord. No. 2014-530, which prohibits discrimination in city employment and city services, city contracts, public accommodations, private employment, and housing based on an individual’s sex, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, familial status, marital status, military status, religion, disability, sexual orientation, genetic information, gender identity, or pregnancy?”

As the Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart writes, “the answer to the Houston ballot question should be yes.”

Some LGBT media outlets are claiming the ad “uses a “flushed toilet as analogy to LGBTQ people,” or “compares LGBTQ people to dollar bills being flushed down a toilet,” but that seems to be a stretch.

Here’s FRC’s ridiculous ad:
