Donald Trump Says He’s Not Homophobic: ‘You Know Who Loves Me? The Tea Party. The Evangelicals.’
CNN’s Don Lemon asks Donald Trump if he’s homophobic. His response? Groups who are.
Donald Trump sat down with CNN’s Don Lemon for an interview that aired Wednesday evening.Â
“Do you think that you are homophobic?,” Lemon asked.
“I think that I’m a very nice person,” Trump responded. “I love people, and I have to tell you, when you look at those polls, it’s across the board. You know who loves me? The Tea Party. The evangelicals. I’m leading with evangelicals — I love them, they love me. I’m Presbyterian, I’m Protestant, and they like me. You know why? Because they think I’m gonna do a great job for the country.”Â
Lemon went on to say, “Some people may perceive you as racist. Answer that.”
“So I just did a speech for the African-American Chamber of Commerce of South Carolina. They just wrote me the most beautiful letter I’ve gotten in a long time saying how unfairly I got treated by the press,” Trump claimed. “I did it as a favor to a couple of friends who just happen to be African-American.”
Trump went on to say he had been “surrounded by a tremendous number of people,” but was angry because CNN aired a photo of a room half-filled with empty seats.
The GOP frontrunner likely was referring to this image, which appears to not show him surrounded by a tremendous number of people:

Earlier in the interview, Lemon asked Trump about his controversial response several weeks ago to a supporter who had said the problem in America is Muslims, and claimed President Obama is Muslim.
“He said Muslims are a problem, OK? That’s what he said, OK? Are they a problem? You tell me,” Trump said. “I don’t see the people … that knocked down the World Trade Center going back to Sweden. OK? So he said Muslims are a problem.”
When pressed for his personal views, Trump responded, “I think a certain segment are certainly a problem.”
Watch the interview, cued up to the question about being homophobic. Earlier in the video are Trump’s comments about Muslims.
