UPDATED: RNC Cancels GOP Presidential Debate On NBC Over Disastrous CNBC Performance

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus is fighting back, after the Republican presidential candidates blasted him for the terrible CNBC debate.

If you watched Wednesday night’s Republican presidential debate on CNBC, there’s a good chance you were disappointed. Commnts on social media were filled with negative reviews, attacking the moderators for their inability to control the candidates, for their poor questions, and for the overall tone of the night.

Now, the RNC is fighting back, with Chairman Reince Priebus announcing he is canceling the GOP debate that NBC was scheduled to host – and with it, a huge amount of ad dollars the debate bring to their news network hosts.

Claiming that CNBC’s “handling of the debate was conducted in bad faith,” Priebus writes in a letter to NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack, the “RNC’s sole role in the primary debate process is to ensure that our candidates are given a full and fair opportunity to lay out their vision for America’s future. We simply cannot continue with NBC without full consultation with our campaigns.” 

Priebus acknowledges the obvious that most likely don’t know. CNBC is not under the control of NBC News, which might explain the poor performance the moderators delivered Wednesday.

“Questions were inaccurate or downright offensive. The first question directed to one of our candidates asked if he was running a comic book version of a presidential campaign, hardly in the spirit of how the debate was billed,” Priebus writes. “CNBC’s moderators engaged in a series of “gotcha” questions, petty and mean-spirited in tone, and designed to embarrass our candidates.”

For some strange and inexplicable reason, Priebus decided to include this line:

“I have tremendous respect for the First Amendment and freedom of the press,” indicating that he, too, has a flawed understanding of the First Amendment, which applies only to the government, and the RNC is not an arm of the government.

Of course, given the calls for his firing over the disastrous debate, Priebus was not above a bit of grandstanding.

For their part, many if nor most of the GOP presidential candidates are meeting to discuss the format of future debates, and have specified that no one from the RNC will be allowed to attend.
