Lawmakers in Ireland, five months after a public referendum, have now passed a law which will make same-sex marriage legal.
In May Ireland became the first nation in history where same-sex marriage was won in a public vote at the polls. That referendum paved the way for lawmakers to vote on marriage, and today they completed the final passage of a same-sex marriage bill.
The marriage bill was passed quickly and Senators erupted into applause upon passage:
The Irish Examiner reports the marriage bill “is now ready to be signed into law next week,” and marriages can begin in about two weeks.
