Bernie Sanders Calls For Removing Marijuana From Federal List Of Dangerous Drugs

Bernie Sanders is making a dramatic move, calling on the federal government to reclassify marijuana as not dangerous.

In a dramatic move being heralded by proponents of marijuana legalization, Bernie Sanders today will announce he is calling on the federal government to remove the cannabis from its list of dangerous drugs.

The Democratic presidential candidate will make the statement in a speech today at in speech at George Mason University in Virginia, according to the Washington Post.

Sanders also posted this tweet today:

If the government were to agree, it would allow states to regulate marijuana as they now do tobacco and alcohol.

“Too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of marijuana use,” Sanders told the Washington Post. “That’s wrong. That has got to change.”

Hillary Clinton has taken a wait-and-see approach, saying she’d like to see how states that have legalized the usage of marijuana are doing with it. Martin O’Malley has called for pot to be moved to the Schedule 2 drug list, which would make its regulation less strict than currently.
