‘The Battle Has Just Begun’: Kim Davis Tells Supporters She Is A ‘Soldier For Christ’ In Emails

Kim Davis freely used religious references in emails to supporters.

Rowan County, Kentucky clerk Kim Davis routinely referenced God and religion in emails to supporters, a freedom of information request by the Associated Press for recently obtained emails has revealed. Davis, who has refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, citing her religious beliefs, and was jailed for contempt of court described herself in an email as a “soldier for Christ.”

The emails encompass the weeks before Davis spent six days in jail and “offer some insight into her state of mind in the weeks leading up to” her incarceration, the AP reports.

Davis told one supporter just hours after the ACLU filed suit in federal court against her for four couples – two same-sex and two different-sex – that the “battle has just begun.”

That same day, July 2, Davis wrote to a supporter that it “has truly been a firestorm here and the days are pretty much a blur, but I am confident that God is in control of all of this!!”

“I desire your prayers, I will need strength that only God can supply and I need a backbone like a saw log!!”

The emails also reveal Davis refused service to “a series of couples, both gay and straight,” the AP says, telling one man he could obtain a marriage license at a neighboring county clerk’s office.

Since news broke, thanks to a viral video by one same-sex couple of Davis refusing them a marriage license, the Rowan County Courthouse had been the focus of marriage equality supporters and opponents, not to mention the news media. Davis told a supporter that demonstrators were using a bullhorn to protest outside her office.

One supporter from Somerset, Kentucky apparently was especially concerned for her well-being.

“Will your lawyers and several decent people be around you to protect you from the wicked threatening homosexual mob and their supporters?,” Willie Ramsey asked.

“They are going to try and make a whipping post out of me!!” Davis responded. “I know it, but God is still alive and on the throne!!! He IS in control and knows exactly where I am!!”

Later, as her emergency appeals to the federal Court of Appeals and Supreme Court failed and a federal judge’s deadline for her to obey the law loomed, Davis told Ramsey, “September 1 will be the day to prepare for, if the Lord doesn’t return before then.” She added, “I have weighed the cost, and will stay the course.”

Ramsey reportedly told her he would block the courthouse door from law enforcement if they came to arrest her.

“I’m sure it will be a mad house!!” she responded, but assured him that “God will still be in control!!”
