Vast Majority Of Americans Across Nearly Every Demographic Think Kim Davis Is Wrong

Kim Davis has little support in America, even among groups who traditionally might have supported her actions, a new poll released today finds.

Despite winning an award for her actions, Rowan County clerk Kim Davis is largely believed to be in the wrong by vast majorities of every demographic of Americans except two.

Davis spent six days in jail for contempt of court after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, claiming it violated her faith to do so.

Americans disagree.

Overall, three out of four registered American voters (74%) say treating everyone equally under the law trumps an individual’s personal religious beliefs (19%). That includes 80 percent of Democrats, 75 percent of Independents, and even 66 percent of Republicans.

More specifically, 63 percent of all Americans say Davis should “be required to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples,” again, including the majorities of Americans across all party lines. The only group that did not have a majority stating Davis should be required to issue licenses are conservatives. 45 percent said she should be, 49 percent said she should not be.

Looking at religion, the only group who did not believe Davis should have to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples are White evangelical Protestants, coming in at 61 percent. By comparison, 70 percent of Catholics, for example, believe she should.

The Washington Post/ABC poll was conducted Sept. 7–10, among 1003 adults.
