Religious Right Hero Kim Davis Switches Parties

Rowan County clerk Kim Davis, a hero of the religious right but a Democrat for decades, just changed parties.

Kim Davis is now a Republican.

The anti-gay Kentucky clerk who was jailed for contempt of court after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples has decided to join the party of her supporters, not her opponents.

“My husband and I had talked about it for quite a while and we came to the conclusion that the Democratic Party left us a long time ago, so why were we hanging on?,” Davis told Reuters.

Davis will be speaking tonight at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit, where she will receive an award for religious liberty.

She also, contrary to her earlier claims, told Reuters that the marriage licenses issued after her release from jail are valid. She altered the forms by removing her name and the name of the county. The ACLU has filed a motion asking Judge David Bunning to force Davis to use unaltered forms.
