McCarthy Now Says Benghazi Investigation Has Nothing To Do With Politics After Saying It Totally Did

The Congressman most likely to be the next GOP Speaker of the House now says what he told Fox News is totally not what he told Fox News, the Benghazi investigation has “nothing to do with politics,” and wasn’t designed to harm Hillary Clinton.

“What you’re going to see is a conservative speaker that takes a conservative congress, that puts a strategy to fight and win. And let me give you one example,” Rep. Kevin McCarthy told Fox News’ Sean Hannity Tuesday night, explaining why he should be the next Speaker of the House.

“Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she’s untrustable. But no one would have known any of that had happened, had we not fought.”

Yes, as NCRM reported earlier today, a Republican Congressman just admitted to using public funds to try to take down a political opponent, and even boasted about having a “strategy” to do so.

Now, McCarthy, who likely will be elected Speaker this week, issued a statement trying to walk back his widely replayed comments on Fox News.

“The Select Committee on Benghazi has always been focused on getting the facts about the attacks on our diplomatic facilities in Libya that led to the death of four Americans,” Rep. McCarthy spokesperson Matt Sparks said in a statement.

“This was the right thing to do and the Committee has worked judiciously and honestly,” his statement continues. “As a result of that work, there are now numerous investigations being conducted – including the Federal Bureau of Investigation. These inquiries have nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the consequences of what the former Secretary has done and her confusing, conflicting, and demonstrably false responses.” [Bolding ours]

This single Benghazi investigation has already cost taxpayers $4.5 million, Democratic Rep. Linda Sanchez, who is a member of the committee, said on MSNBC this afternoon.
