The preacher father of the Benham Brothers, and a reported neo-confederate white supremacist were among the organizers of a Labor Day protest at the home of the judge who jailed Kim Davis.
About 30 supporters of Kim Davis massed in front of the home of U.S. District Judge David Bunning Labor Day afternoon, protesting his decision to jail the Rowan County clerk after she repeatedly violated his order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Federal marshals and local law enforcement officers had to be called to protect Bunning and his home.
The protest was organized by Flip Benham, the preacher father of the Benham Brothers, and by Michael Peroutka, whom HRC has labeled “an active white supremacist and secessionist sympathizer.” Benham runs the anti-abortion group Operation Save America, and Peroutka, the former Chairman of the Constitution Party of Maryland and the head of the paleoconservative group the Institute on the Constitution, which reportedly has ties to Judge Roy Moore.
Protestors are demanding Bunning release Davis, claiming she has committed no crime and no broken any law. They also claim Bunning is the law-breaker.
Ahead of the protest, Benham issued a press release promising that “Christians from across the nation will converge on the neighborhood of Federal Court Judge David Bunning, today. Judge Bunning has illegally and with malice charged Mrs. Kim Davis, with contempt of his court order forcing her to legitimize illegal marriage certificates to individuals of the same sex in Rowan County.”
“We are calling for the sheriff of Rowan County to immediately arrest Judge David Bunning upon his entering the courthouse on Thursday, Sept. 10 for illegally incarcerating Davis and impeding her from performing her duties as county clerk. Judge Bunning is in contempt of the Court of Almighty God and the constitutions of both Kentucky and the United States,” Benham’s release states.
