At a press conference this afternoon, attorneys for jailed county clerk Kim Davis shared updates and their plan forward.
At a 2:30 PM press conference today, Liberty Counsel attorneys for Kim Davis told reporters the Rowan County clerk has “no intention to resign” and remains in good spirits, after spending a full day behind bars for contempt of court.
Davis will remain in jail until she either resigns her elected position or agrees to issue marriage licenses to all couples regardless of gender. Her attorneys have said it is “factually impossible” for her to do so.
“All is well,” Davis told her attorneys this morning. Liberty Counsel chair Mat Staver said Davis “has a clean conscience, even though she’s incarcerated behind these bars,” and “will remain the clerk of Rowan County as long as the people” want her to.
Davis’ attorneys will file an appeal of her contempt charge by end of business today. Thursday, U.S. District Court judge David Bunning, noting fines wouldn’t be sufficiently motivating for Davis to take action, ordered her into the custody of federal marshals. Fines can be paid by anyone and Davis has plenty of supporters.
Saying she “will not betray her faith,” attorneys called Davis “a prisoner of her conscience.”
Staver also claimed any marriage licenses issued without Davis’ signature “are not worth the paper that they are written on.”
That remains to be seen, but may be true, given Kentucky’s laws.
Staver also compared Davis to other “prisoners of conscience.”
“Kim joins a long list of people who were imprisoned for their conscience. People who today we admire, like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jan Huss, John Bunyan, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and more.”
Surprisingly, he left off Rosa Parks.
