Attorney For Kim Davis Compares Her To Abraham Lincoln (Video)

Mat Staver has compared Kim Davis to Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., and now, to President Abraham Lincoln.

Kim Davis‘ attorney on Sunday felt it fitting to compare the defiant Rowan County clerk who continues to refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples to the late President Abraham Lincoln.

Mat Staver, the head of Liberty Counsel, which is listed on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of active anti-gay hate groups, appeared on C-SPAN and responded to a caller who believes Davis should do her job or resign.

“Well, she is doing her job quite well,” Staver told the caller. “By the end of this year, she will have saved the taxpayers in Rowan County $1.5 million in her first year as the elected official since 2014, so that’s quite substantial, to be able to do that.”

“Secondly,” Staver continued, “if we told Abraham Lincoln, ‘Abraham Lincoln, you should just go along with the Dred Scott decision. After all, it is what the racist Chief Justice Taney wrote and it’s the law of the land.’ And yet, Lincoln advocated something different than that and unfortunately because of that Dred Scott decision we had to fight a Civil War. It was a terrible time in our history.”

Kim Davis, contrary to what Staver might believe, is not President Abraham Lincoln, nor does she have the executive powers the late great president had. The Dred Scott decision of course is considered among the most misguided decision the Supreme Court has made. The 14th Amendment was passed to overturn it.

Raw Story’s David Ferguson, who first reported on Staver’s comments, noted, “Staver has made previous statements comparing Davis to Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Jews living in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust.”

“This is the Rosa Parks on the bus. If they tell you to go to the back of the bus because your skin color doesn’t match what they want, don’t go to the back of the bus. This is the time for peaceful resistance, and this is the time to stand with people who are engaged in peaceful resistance,” Staver has stated.
