‘Homosexuals’ Over ‘Heroes’: Huckabee Takes Aim At Obama’s Gay Nominee To Head US Army

Mike Huckabee quickly responded to the news that the next nominee to head the U.S. Army will be an openly-gay man.

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee was the first GOP presidential candidate to respond to President Barack Obama’s choice to be the next civilian leader of the U.S. Army, accusing the Commander-in-Chief of choosing “homosexuals” over “heroes.” Eric Fanning, an openly-gay man who currently serves as Acting Under Secretary of the Army and Chief Management Officer, was nominated by the President on Friday.

“It’s clear President Obama is more interested in appeasing America’s homosexuals than honoring America’s heroes,” Huckabee, said in a statement Saturday afternoon, ignoring the fact that countless LGBT service members at every level are also America’s heroes.

UPDATE: Mike Huckabee’s Supporters Want Obama ‘Tried For Treason’ For Nominating Gay Man To Lead US Army

“Veterans suicide is out-of-control and military readiness is dangerously low, yet Obama is so obsessed with pandering to liberal interest groups he’s nominated an openly gay civilian to run the Army. Homosexuality is not a job qualification. The U.S. military is designed to keep Americans safe and complete combat missions, not conduct social experiments.”

Huckabee never served in the military, he reportedly has said, due to “flat feet.”

Fanning, 47, previously served as Chief of Staff of the Department of Defense and also served as Acting Secretary of the Air Force. He also served “as deputy under secretary of the Navy and deputy director of the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism.”

DOD Federal Globe, an advocacy non-profit for LGBT employees of the Department of Defense announced support for Fanning in the wake of Huckabee’s remarks, calling him a “fine example of a federal career employee.”

“His being openly gay gives hope to the thousands of past and present employees that are either LGBT or allies,” Executive Director Lisa Kove told NCRM in an email conversation. Fanning “has and continues to serve our nation with diligence, intellect, and provides the best example possible of a leader within the department.”
