Fox News Anchor: Kim Davis Supporters Are ‘Haters’ Who Claim They Want Religion Out Of Government

Fox News’ Shepard Smith cut in on Tuesday’s rally for Kim Davis to tell viewers just exactly who her supporters really are.

As Liberty Counsel attorney Mat Staver was speaking to a crowd of about 1000 Tuesday at a rally organized by Mike Huckabee to support Kim Davis and celebrate her release from jail, Fox News anchor Shepard Smith broke in, as anchors often do, to tell his audience what was going on. But chances are good his Fox News audience didn’t expect what came next.

“They set this up as a religious play again,” Smith told them. “This is the same crowd that says, ‘We don’t want Sharia law, don’t let them tell us what to do, keep their religion out of our lives and out of our government.’ Well, here we go again.”

“When this started, this lawyer said he needed an accommodation for a woman who wanted one. She said she didn’t want her name on a license for gay people,” Smith said. “Now they’ve come up with one, they’ve let her out of jail… But it’s not what they want.”

“This is what they want, what you’re hearing now and this what they’re going to get: stirred up argument and a couple of days in the news cycle, and they’re going to be able to make these claims.”

Smith noted same-sex marriage has been settled law since the Supreme Court ruled in June, but added disruptions like the Kim Davis issue are “not unprecedented. They did it when they said black and white people couldn’t marry.”

“Haters are going to hate,” Smith concluded. “We thought what this woman wanted was an accommodation, which they’ve granted her, something that worked for everybody. But it’s not what they want.”

This is not the first time Fox News has taken a dim view of the Kim Davis story. On Monday, a legal panel on Fox News concluded her attorney’s defense was “stunningly obtuse” and “ridiculously stupid.”

Smith apparently was proud of his remarks, as he retweeted the story Mediaite wrote about it:
