Pastor Who Said Stoning Gays Is God’s ‘Mindset’ Is Shocked People Think He Supports Stoning Gays

A Tennessee pastor who said God’s “mindset” supports stoning gays says he was just quoting the Bible.

Chances are you’ve seen the video this week that shows a young, charismatic Tennessee pastor calling homosexuality an abomination and saying God’s mindset supports stoning gay people.

“God does not approve of homosexuality or gay marriage,” Bailey said on his Internet Christian worship service. “The scripture says… that is vile, unnatural and deserving of a penalty… It’s an abomination that under the Old Testament deserved stoning.”

“And so, is our God, the God of Bible, wanting us to go somewhere where it’s liberal, relaxed views and anything goes? No, that’s the effect of a very liberal society. And we need to make sure that such is not the idea or the mindset of God,” Bailey explained.

Now Pastor Bailey is coming under fire, with some saying he is advocating for the stoning of gay people.

And he’s fighting back.

“We do not believe in stoning homosexuals,” Bailey tells WTAE. He says the New Testament doesn’t teach that, “and I didn’t teach that in the video.”

But as NCRM reported, on Bailey’s church website they do discuss stoning gay people, and even say that the New Testament preaches against homosexuality:

“Did you know that the New Testament says that homosexuality is a sin against God and nature?,” the text of a sermon given by Bailey reads. “In Romans 1:26-29 we are told that homosexuality is immoral and ungodly, and that people who engage in such will receive the eternal punishment that is due to them if they do not change their ways.”

Bailey tells WTAE that of course, “we do not believe any Christian anywhere should stone Christians,” certainly an odd choice of words. What about atheists, or people of another faith?

In the interview Bailey says he wants LGBT people “to go to heaven.” But that too is an odd statement, for in the text of that same online sermon, he says, “the Bible clearly teaches that homosexuals will not go to Heaven.”

Meanwhile, Bailey says he’ll continue to preach the Bible as he always has.

“Our motivation is out of love.”
