One In Three Americans Under 30 Say They’re Not 100% Heterosexual

A new poll finds that increasingly, especially young Americans see their sexuality as more fluid than just gay or straight.

Increasingly, Americans, especially younger Americans, are less willing to place themselves in a gay, straight, or bisexual category, seeing their sexual as more fluid than other generations.

A new poll just released by YouGov finds that for Americans 18-29, one in three say they are not totally heterosexual.

YouGov modified the iconic Kinsey scale of human sexuality, and polled 1000 adults this month.

“Please try to place your sexuality on a scale of 0 to 6, where 0 is completely heterosexual and 6 is completely homosexual,” the survey asked.

31 percent, or nearly one in three Americans under 30 years old indicated they are not 100% heterosexual.

Overall, 78 percent of all adults polled said they identify as 100 percent heterosexual, and four percent said 100% homosexual. But 16 percent chose between 1 and 5, indicating varying degrees of attraction to members of a different or same gender.

“Sexuality is a scale,” 39 percent overall agreed, saying “it is possible to be somewhere near the middle.”

18 percent of American adults have had a same-sex sexual experience, including 12 percent who identify as heterosexual. 27 percent of people who identify as heterosexual said it is or might be possible for them to be attracted to a person of the same sex.

As NCRM reported this week, YouGov performed a similar poll in the UK, and found that one in two adults 18-29 said they were not 100% heterosexual.
