Kim Davis Issued Marriage License To Trans Man: ‘She Saw Just A Straight Couple In Love’ He Says At Rally

A transgender man whose birth certificate still identifies him as female says Kentucky clerk Kim Davis issued him a marriage license without checking his birth certificate.

Equality advocates today held a “Protest for Equality” march outside the Rowan County courthouse to protest Kim Davis’ continued refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. In advance of the protest, which was advertised via Facebook and social media, Davis closed the county clerk’s office, which was scheduled to be open according to her office’s website.

Local reports state between “several dozen demonstrators” and “about 150“ came to protest Davis and to offer support for same-sex couples.

One Morehead couple stepped forward to say the husband is a transgender man whose birth certificate still identifies him as female. They say in February Davis issued them a marriage license without asking to see either person’s birth certificate.

“She saw just a straight couple in love, and she should see everybody like that,” Camryn Colen, who is transgender, told the Courier-Journal. “She shouldn’t just see straight couples like that.”

Camryn, an Iraq War veteran, and his wife, Alexis Colen, say they have tried to not go public out of fear for the safety of their six-month old daughter, but felt compelled given Davis’ actions.

“Stuff has just escalated and gotten ridiculous, and we decided that we were going to come forward with it,” Alexis said.

The couple also said they want to help make the world equal.

“We’re not doing it for us. We’re married. That’s for us. We have a daughter. That’s for us. We’re doing it for the rest of the community,” he told The Independent. “We’re going to prove to Kim Davis that she can’t judge a book by its cover.”

The rally was organized by the Rowan County Rights Coalition. Protestors chanted, “Gay or straight, black or white, marriage is an equal right.” Cars that drove by honked in support.

Tom Morgan, an LGBT activist whose prior work includes organizing protests of an Ohio anti-gay billboard campaign that grew into erecting pro-equality billboards, helped organize today’s rally.

“Despite the efforts of some, Love Wins, again,” Morgan told NCRM of today’s demonstration.

Editor’s note: It’s important to note that transgender persons should not be required to change their birth certificates if they do not choose to, nor should the state refuse to change them should they choose to. Also, it’s important to note the Supreme Court’s Obergefell ruling makes the gender of the spouses irrelevant. This story is not about transgender issues so much as it is about Davis’ decision making practices. NCRM fully support the rights of all LGBT people.
