‘Marriage Was Ordained By God Almighty’: Ted Cruz Preaches At ‘Pro-Family’ Rally (Video)

Ted Cruz brought the full preacher’s son persona with him to South Carolina this weekend, where he bellowed against same-sex marriage and the Supreme Court.

This weekend’s We Stand With God political-religious rally was held on the steps of the South Carolina state house where several thousand Christians braved the hot sun to hear GOP rivals Senator Ted Cruz and former Governor Rick Perry deliver sermons preaching against same-sex marriage, the Supreme Court, and in favor of “pro-family” values.

Falsely calling the Supreme Court’s decision on marriage in Obergefell “fundamentally illegitimate,” and “lawless,” Cruz won cheers from the audience of conservative Christians. “Let me tell you something,” he said. “Marriage existed long before the United States Supreme Court. Marriage existed long before the United States of America. Marriage was not ordained by any law in this country,” Cruz preached, neglecting to add that marriage existed before Jesus Christ, and even before the Old Testament.

“Marriage was ordained by God Almighty, and Caesar has no jurisdiction over the pulpit,” Sen. Cruz preached. He also promoted his bill that would add an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would allow states to outlaw same-sex marriage.

“I’ll make a promise to you that every justice I appoint to the United States Supreme Court will follow the law and follow the Constitution and not impose their radical views on the people of America,” Cruz said, stopping short of an anti-gay marriage litmus test for judicial nominees.

Last week, the National Organization for Marriage boasted that Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, Rick Santorum, and Ben Carson all signed their marriage pledge that would tie them to overturning the Supreme Court’s marriage ruling – a nearly impossible task.

And Cruz tried his best to get the what he said were the “54 million evangelical Christians” who “stayed home” at the last election, as Right Wing Watch reports, to come to the polls next year to vote – presumably for him.

“If you ask ourselves why do we live in a country where life is under assault, where marriage is under assault, where faith is under assault,” Cruz continued, “the last election, 54 million evangelical Christians stayed home. Fifty-four million. Is it any wonder we have the country we have when believers are not honoring the commands of the Scripture? We’re told to be salt and light. You can’t be salt if you don’t come into contact with that which you are to preserve. You cannot be light if you’re hidden under a bushel.”

And Cruz claimed, “there is a spirit of revival and awakening sweeping this country today.” He insisted evangelicals “will stay home no longer,” promising God will “heal our land,” if evangelicals come out to vote.
