A newly-placed flag was removed from its owner’s home and set on fire atop her car on Monday.
On Friday, a Forsyth County, Georgia woman replaced the American flag flying from her house with the gay pride flag, in honor of the Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage. On Monday, that flag was removed from her house and burned, on top of her car.
The woman, whose name police are not releasing out of concern for her safety, reported the crime on Tuesday morning to police.
“From the beginning, we’re treating it as an obvious hate crime … because previously the house had an American flag flying and just on Friday they changed it to a rainbow flag,†Forsyth County sheriff’s office spokesman Robin Regan told the Forsyth County News.
According to police, gasoline “was poured on the asphalt driveway around the vehicle and ignited.” It was also used on the homeowner’s lawn.
Astoundingly, no one was injured and the car retained only minor damage.
The Advocate notes “a rash of arsons in the South recently, mostly affecting historically black churches. An LGBT mural in San Francisco’s Mission District was torched on Monday, after already being ignited two other times.”
