Todd Starnes is back attacking LGBT people, delivering an anti-gay sermon that included a startling “celebrity” endorsement.
Todd Starnes ventured outside of New York City this weekend, back to his home state of Georgia to deliver a sermon at Augusta’s Abilene Baptist Church. The Fox News religion reporter as he often does, tried to open on a light note before delving into the depravity of gay people and same-sex marriage.Â
Lamenting the lack of sweet tea in the Empire State, Starnes relayed his excitement upon landing and seeing “a Waffle House, a Cracker Barrel, and of course a Chick-fil-A,” which the anti-gay reporter anointed “the official chicken of Jesus,” according to his Baptist
After telling his audience that he believes “the reason that God blessed America is because we know how to smoke a pork butt,” Starnes dropped the comedy act and launched into his anti-gay tirade.
“There is a war on religious liberty! he cried. “And this war is not targeting people of the Muslim faith or the Jewish faith or the Hindu faith. This war on religious liberty is targeting people of the Christian faith,” he warned. Starnes, who sees everything that does not fit into his personal Christian worldview as an attack on Christianity, earlier this year claimed that New York City’s decision to include two Muslim holidays on its school calendar is anti-Christian “discrimination.”
Christians “are on the verge of having our faith criminalized,” Starnes also told the audience.
“I believe that we are just a few short years away from the government imposing their will on Christian churches,” Starnes fear-mongered, ignoring the fact that “the government” is the American people. “And I believe that pastors could find themselves at odds with the law of the land.”
He went on to insist that “the Supreme Court may have redefined marriage but God hasn’t redefined anything.”
Starnes, who is pro-confederate flag, added, “if you think the cultural purging of the ‘Dukes of Hazard’ has been breathtaking in recent days, wait until you see what they’re about to do to Christians.”
And, of course, he falsely characterized the State of Oregon’s decision in the Sweet Cakes by Melissa case.
“The Supreme Court decision now means that gay rights trump religious liberty,” Starnes falsely claimed, referring to the marriage ruling last month. “And churches and faith-based organizations must prepare for the lawsuits and government investigations that are on the way.”
And, then this insane statement:
“Pastors that refuse to perform gay marriages and preach from the Bible should prepare for hate crime charges,” the Fox News journalist insisted, despite the existence of the First Amendment. “All dissent will be silenced,” Starnes added, using his false classification of the Sweet Cakes decision to shore up his false analysis.
The Fox News reporter went on and on, claiming that four-year olds are being taught about “transgenderism,” mockingly announcing that they may wake up as one gender but by third period feel like another.
And then he launched into a list of people who lost their jobs, falsely classifying the reasons why to attack the LGBT community.
“The time has come for all of us to stand together with one voice!” Starnes preached. “They may demand to know the content of our prayers, they may try to shut down our bakeries, they may try to silence our voices, but we will not be silenced! We will not be intimidated!”
The amount of ignorance, hate, false statements, and fear-mongering Starnes packed into one speech is astonishing. The fact that his audience ate it up like a Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich and waffle fries is the real tragedy.
