Clerk Who Won’t Issue Marriage Licenses Offers Religious Defense In Federal Court Testimony (Video)

A Kentucky clerk some say is hypocritical for marrying four times but refusing same-sex couples licenses, testified in court today.

Kim Davis delivered highly-anticipated testimony in federal court today. The Rowan County, Kentucky clerk told a judge she cannot issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples due to her religious beliefs. 

“If I authorize it, I’m saying I agree with it. I can’t do that,” Davis, an apostolic Christian, told the judge.

Davis did not answer several important hypothetical questions asked by an attorney for the ACLU, which brought the case against her. Among them, according to WKYT, were, could a clerk based on his or her religious beliefs, refuse to issue licenses to an interracial couple or to a couple where one or both members had been divorced.

Davis told the judge that she had prayed and fasted over her decision.

“It wasn’t just a spur-of-the-moment decision,” Davis said, according to the Courier-Journal. “It was thought-out and I sought God on it.”

Davis did say in court when asked that she doesn’t know who has final say over the Constitution. She also said that she knew the Supreme Court would likely issue a ruling on marriage, when she took office in January.

Davis came to national attention when she refused a same-sex couple a marriage license in a video that went viral. She came under fire when it was reported that she has been married four times, with some calling her hypocritical.

U.S. District Judge David L. Bunning says he will issue his ruling the week of August 11.
