Breaking: Macy’s Dumps Donald Trump Over Anti-Immigrant Comments
After more than a decade selling his China-made clothing, Macy’s just announced it is cutting ties with Donald Trump.
Since 2004, Macy’s has been selling clothing from Donald Trump. Despite efforts to get the “World’s Largest Store” to sever ties with the billionaire over made comments he’s made during that time, executives at Macy’s held fast.Â
But after Trump’s comments disparaging Mexicans, and Hispanics, over the past few weeks, Macy’s, following NBC and Univision’s lead, is dumping Trump.
“Macy’s is a company that stands for diversity and inclusion,” Macy’s said in a statement late this morning. “We welcome all customers, and respect for the dignity of all people is a cornerstone of our culture. We are disappointed and distressed by recent remarks about immigrants from Mexico.”
Unsurprisingly, as he did when NBC and Univision severed ties with him, Trump, according to CNBC, “said he was the one who decided to terminate the partnership, citing ‘the pressure being put on [Macy’s] by outside sources.'”
The partnership’s end comes after more than 728,000 people signed a petition on MoveOn.org asking Macy’s CEO Terry Lundgren to “dump Trump.” And on Tuesday, online Latino organization Presente.org issued a statement saying it “demand Macy’s take a stand against discrimination.”
Trump’s remarks were stunning and drew considerable criticism.Â
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best… They’re sending people who have lots of problems,” Trump said during his campaign announcement speech. “They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists, and some I assume are good people.”
Activist Angelo Carusone, who is responsible for convincing advertisers to leave Glenn Beck’s Fox News show, and Rush Limbaugh’s radio show, has been working for years to get Macy’s to dump Trump.
