Bobby Jindal Again Halts Louisiana State Agencies From Recognizing Same-Sex Marriages

Gov. Bobby Jindal just directed all state agencies to continue to not recognize legal same-sex marriage, despite saying he would recognize them.

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Bobby Jindal stated he would comply with the Supreme Court’s decision on marriage for same-sex couples. Jindal promised to respect the ruling.

“We don’t have a choice, our agencies will comply with the court order,” the Louisiana governor promised.

That was Sunday.

Earlier, immediately after Friday’s ruling, Jindal’s spokesperson Mike Reed told reporters that Louisiana’s State “agencies will have no choice but to comply with the Supreme Court’s decision when the 5th Circuit Court orders the ruling into effect – even though we disagree with it and believe it was wrongly decided, and has nothing to do with the Constitution.”

On Wednesday, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ordered just that, stating very strongly that the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges is in effect and all must comply.

Gov. Bobby Jindal, running for the Republican nomination for president on a strong Christian platform, on Wednesday night refused to comply.

“Jindal has decided Louisiana same-sex couples need to wait for yet another court’s decision,” The Times-Picayune reported late Wednesday night. “Our agencies will follow the Louisiana Constitution until the District Court orders us otherwise,” Reed now says.

The appeals court gave the district court until until July 17 to make a new ruling, though it has encouraged the district court to do so earlier. One of the plaintiffs in the case, Robert Welles, is in declining health.

“I wait every day for a phone call,” said the 52-year-old Welles. “The way I see it, we started this thing in New Orleans, and we want to finish it in New Orleans.”

And while it may only be a matter of time, a few weeks perhaps, Jindal’s refusal to comply with the intent of both the U.S. Supreme Court and the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals is causing difficulties for same-sex couples.

Jindal’s state-wide ban on recognizing the legally performed marriages in his own state means couples cannot change their names on drivers licenses and other important legal documents, adoptions could be on hold – or at least the names of both parents on birth certificates could be refused – and even death certificates cannot include a same-sex spouse’s name.
