‘A Bill That Will Pass’: Chad Griffin Talks About Sweeping LGBT Civil Rights Protections Bill

Chad Griffin and HRC are supporting sweeping legislation that would protect LGBT people in seven key areas, including housing and employment.

Tomorrow, Democratic lawmakers in the House and the Senate will introduce legislation to protect LGBT people on seven major fronts, including employment, housing, education, credit, and other vital areas. The Equality Act has a long road ahead, especially as some LGBT leaders and organizations are still battling over whether the legislation should directly amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Fair Housing Act, or whether these protections should live in a separate law.

Regardless, Griffin, who sat down with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell today, says that “at the end of the day, this is a bill that will pass.”

Griffin and Mitchell, herself a longtime LGBT rights supporter, also discussed the Republicans’ unnecessary and dangerous bill to advance the “right” to discriminate against LGBT people on religious grounds. That bill, the First Amendment Protection Act, would bring sweeping changes to current laws, codifying discrimination similar to “religious freedom” bills we’ve seen crop up in states like Indiana and Arkansas this year.

You can read more about the legislation and how it could positively affect you.
