Trans Person Murdered, Beaten And Shot Four Times – 100 Mourners Attend Vigil And Protest

The LGBTQI community in Chihuahua, Mexico is demanding a quick and thorough investigation into the violent murder of a trans person earlier this week.

An unidentified trans person was found murdered on Monday morning in Chihuahua, Mexico. According to La Cronica de Chihuahua, the victim was severely beaten and had a fractured cheekbone, nose, and jaw. The victim died from asphyxiation prior to being shot in the head four times with a 9mm gun. Sin Etiquetas, a Latin American digital media source, states that the face was also wrapped in tape and then covered with a Mexican flag.

It is not known how the victim preferred to be identified.

Female pronouns were used by reporters when describing the 20-30 year-old victim who was found wearing blue jeans, and what appeared to be a white shirt or blouse. According to Josué Sandoval, the Commissioner of Sexual Diversity for the Party of the Democratic Revolution, the victim preferred to “work as a man,” and the killer allegedly switched the victim’s shoes to yellow work shoes to reflect that.

Sin Etiquetas reports that the LGBTIQ community is considering this to be a hate crime, and they are demanding the Chihuahua state governor, Cesar Duarte, solve the case quickly. It also points to a local newspaper article stating the victim’s body “showed signs of torture all over.” The community also called out the instances of hatred and violence that have increased in recent weeks following the country’s legalization of same-sex marriage. Examples include the numerous protests like the recent one on Tuesday, in which a group of priests blocked the door of the Legislative Palace.

Approximately one hundred LGBTIQ demonstrators gathered in the Plaza del Angel to call attention to the recent increase in violence. Local residents spoke about their fear of being attacked in public just for being who they are, and people of all ages held banners and lit candles in memory of the victims of both recent and past.

The LGBTQI community is demanding swift action, and La Cronica de Chihuahua notes that the Attorney General recently signed an agreement pledging to deal with hate crimes directed towards the LGBTIQ community. The murder is still under investigation.

“We all are equal,” Sandoval said in a statement. “Wars have always been different views of faith leading to eliminate minorities. Remember that diversity enriches.” He went on to state that “comments made by traditionalists cause hate crimes as heinous” as this murder.

The murder is still under investigation.
