Strong Majority Want Supreme Court Justices To Rule In Favor Of Same-Sex Marriage, New Poll Finds

A new poll finds several favorable results for supporters of same-sex marriage.

A new Quinnipiac University national poll just released finds a strong majority of registered American voters – 56 percent – want the Supreme Court to find a constitutional right to marriage for same-sex couples. Only 38 percent do not.

That same poll, which canvassed 1,711 registered voters nationwide also found similar support for same-sex marriage in general: 56-36.

Majorities of women (57%), men (55%), Democrats (70%), and Independents (61%), all back a favorable Supreme Court ruling for marriage equality, with only a majority of Republicans (62%) opposed.

More good news for equality supporters.

The majority of American voters (53%) oppose allowing states to ban same-sex marriage, and 57 percent of voters also believe states should have to honor marriages of same-sex couples from other jurisdictions.

While civil rights and matters of law should not be decided by popular vote, once again we have a large national poll striking down Supreme Court Justice John Roberts‘ suggestion that a “debate” among the American people should still be taking place.

Justice Roberts, during April oral arguments, admitted he was unaware of what the polls show regarding support for same-sex marriage.

The poll was conducted from May 19 – 26.
