Look: Guam Becomes First US Territory To Issue Marriage Licenses To Same-Sex Couples

Guam is issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples right now, and weddings are expected any moment!

It’s 8:30 AM on Tuesday in Guam as of this writing, and already two same-sex couples have applied for and received their marriage licenses, making the island in the western Pacific Ocean the first U.S. territory to recognize same-sex marriage.

There’s a five day waiting period, but some officials are waiving that requirement, as has often been the case when states extend marriage to same-sex couples.

On Friday, a federal judge struck down Guam’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Here are Loretta M. Pangelinan, 28, and Kathleen M. Aguero, 29, the plaintiffs whose lawsuit brought marriage equality to Guam.

“Also planning to marry immediately are Deasia Johnson of Killeen, Texas, and her fiance’, Nikki Dismuke, 37, of New Orleans,” the AP reports. They have been together three years and are in the military.”
