‘Civil Or Biblical Disobedience?’: Huckabee Says Christians Have Just One Choice On Gay Marriage

Tiptoeing around anarchy, Mike Huckabee says Christians only have one real choice if the Supreme Court legalizes same-sex marriage.

Mike Huckabee is not mincing words. The 2016 Republican presidential candidate who has built his post-gubernatorial political career fighting same-sex marriage says true Christians really only have one choice if the Supreme Court finds a right to marriage for same-sex couples.

“I think for a lot of believers, the question becomes, ‘Do we have civil disobedience or do we have biblical disobedience?’,” the ordained Southern Baptist preacher proffered on Friday.

“For many of us, civil disobedience, when we believe the civil government has acted outside of nature and nature’s God, outside of the bounds of the law, outside of the bounds of the Constitution,” Huckabee told Fox News religion reporter Todd Starnes, adding that Christians believe civil disobedience is “the right and moral thing to do.”

Huckabee then compared taking a civil disobedience stand against same-sex marriage to taking a similar stand against the Supreme Court’s flawed and roundly condemned decision in the Dred Scott case. In that case, the Supreme Court ruled that Blacks had no standing to sue the federal government and could never be Americans.

“What if no one had acted in disobedience to the Dred Scott decision of 1857?” Huckabee queried. “What if the entire country had capitulated to judicial tyranny and we just said that because the Supreme Court said in 1857 said that a black person wasn’t fully human? Suppose we had accepted that, suppose Abraham Lincoln, our president, had accepted that, would that have been the right course of action?”

And the former Arkansas governor also called an expected Supreme Court decision supporting same-sex marriage unconstitutional, suggesting that “if we’re not going to follow our Constitution, maybe we should loan it to some developing country so that they could try it out if we’re not going to use it anymore.”
