Grand Jury Indicts Former South Carolina Cop For Fatal Shooting In The Back Of Unarmed Black Man

The grand jury has returned an indictment against Michael Slager in the fatal shooting of Walter Scott, a case that drew nationwide attention and protests.

On April 4, 50-year old Walter Scott was gunned down by South Carolina police officer Michael Slager. The nation was outraged. A video showed Slager, who was fired and arrested for the killing, shooting Scott in the back. He had pulled him over for a broken tail light.

This morning a state grand jury returned an indictment on the charge of murder against Slager, who is 33. He could face 30 years to life in prison.

Scott became one of many unarmed black men fatally gunned down by police officers across the nation.

A new report shows police officers kill about 2.6 people per day in the United States, and are on track to kill nearly 1000 this year.

In April, protests in cities across the nation erupted in the wake of Scott’s death.

And a recording of Slager minutes after the killing of Scott revealed him caught on tape laughing about the adrenaline rush minutes after the shooting.
