GOP Senator: Churches Could Be Forced To Close If Supreme Court Rules For Same-Sex Marriage

Watch as one Republican Senator wildly fear-mongers about what “could” happen if the Supreme Court finds a right to marriage equality.

When politicians don’t want to answer tough questions, they often claim they do not engage in hypothetical speculation.

When Republican Mormon conservative U.S. Senator Mike Lee wants to fear monger about same-sex marriage, he’s more than happy to wildly engage in hypothetical speculation, and even grant an interview to World Net Daily (WND) to do so.

Lee is sponsoring legislation, similar to “religious freedom” bills debated in Indiana, Arkansas, Nevada, and other states, that would make religious-based anti-gay discrimination legal. Lee’s Marriage and Religious Freedom Act allows LGBT people to be denied service if someone has a sincerely held religious belief that doing so would violate their beliefs.

Asked what would happen if the Supreme Court finds a right to marriage for same-sex couples, Lee didn’t hesitate to push his bill, claiming it would protect both religious individuals and institutions from being discriminated against by the federal government, and stop the federal government from retaliating against these religious entities.

“I fear that what could happen is that the government could start discriminating against religious individuals and religious institutions that have a religious belief about the definition of marriage,” Lee told WND. “I don’t want that to happen. I hesitate to imagine what an America that would have that as part of its legal system would look like.”

Senator Lee also wildly fear-mongered that religious institutions and schools “could” close if SCOTUS rules for marriage equality.

Of course, the First Amendment already protects these institutions and individuals, but that isn’t stopping Sen. Lee, whose willingness to engage in wholly un-factual speculation with no basis in law is beyond belief.
