FRC: Gay Marriage Not A Civil Right, But Christians Must Respond To It Like The Civil War

A Family Research Council spokesperson says Christians must respond to a Supreme Court ruling favoring same-sex marriage just as they would have to the Civil War, World War II, or 9/11.

Ken Blackwell yesterday said America isn’t perfect, and hasn’t always “gotten it right,” but when the nation follows “God’s word,” we have – ignoring the fact that the Bible was used to defend both slavery and denial of civil rights of African Americans.

Speaking at two events with his boss, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins, Blackwell claimed that “no one has a civil right to redefine marriage.” He also said “there aren’t any parallels” between the African-American Civil Rights Movement and the movement for LGBT civil rights.

“Blackwell said that how Americans respond to ‘a wrong decision in this marriage case’ will be just as important as the nation’s response to the Civil War, World War II and the September 11, 2001 attacks,” Right Wing Watch reports. “Such a ruling would be ‘another one of those challenging moments, defining moments as to attest of how we response as a nation, but how we also respond as believers, as Christians,’ he said.”

A former Ohio Republican Secretary of State embroiled in several elections and privacy controversies, Blackwell yesterday also claimed that “love is not the basis of marriage.” Perkins jumped in, stating, “nor does everyone have to celebrate it.”

Blackwell adds that he hopes everyone is “ready to take a stand, because it is just as pivotal as the Civil War, World War II and our response to 9/11 as a human community.”

More than 600,000 people were killed during the American Civil War, between 50 million and 85 million people were killed during World War II, and nearly 3000 were killed on 9/11.
