Has Fox News pundit Cal Thomas ever read the Bible?
Conservatives and the religious right have never been very good at checking into the backgrounds of those they hold up as paragons of virtue and righteousness – the recent Duggar family scandal is just one in a long line of many examples. But claiming the Bible as the ultimate standard on which America should base its marriage laws? That may be one of their most foolish blunders in recent memory.
As Raw Story’s David Edwards points out, “polygamy and child marriage were accepted practices in the Bible. Some accounts even claim that Jesus’ mother, Mary, was as young as 12 years old when she married Joseph, who was said to be in his thirties or forties.”
Warning of a “slippery slope,” on Sunday veteran opinion columnist and Fox News contributor Cal Thomas warned that polygamy and “adult-child” marriage could become legalized next unless the U.S. Supreme Court bases its impending same-sex marriage ruling on “scripture.”
“If equal protection covers gays, lesbians, transgenders and the rest, what about the polygamists?†Thomas asked Fox News host Shannon Bream, apparently not understanding the definition of the word “equal.”
“And even further out, the adult-child marriage people, men especially, who want to marry young boys or young girls — as occurs in some Muslim countries, by the way — they want their rights too,” Thomas fear-mongered.
“So, who’s going to say no? And based on what?,” he queried. “Where’s the standard? If it’s not the Constitution, if it’s not scripture, where is the standard?,” Thomas asked, ignoring the fact that the Constitution is the standard.
“If you are going to repeal something that has been part of human history for thousands of years, what’s the new standard? And according to whom?”
Bream had opened the segment mentioning thousands of pastors are promising civil disobedience because they fear a Supreme Court ruling will force them to marry same-sex couples, which of course is not only false but absurd to anyone who has read the First Amendment.
