Todd Starnes is blaming (crediting?) the advancement of the LGBT civil rights movement for the bipartisan movement to remove the Confederate flag from, well, everywhere.
Fox News religion reporter and hyperbolic conservative Christian fundamentalist pundit Todd Starnes is furious – furious – that the Confederate flag is coming down across the nation, after dozens of photos of the 21-year old white supremacist waving it were found after he shot and killed nine members of a Black church.
Starnes, who was raised in Louisiana and went to college in Georgia, is calling it “cultural cleansing,” a term often reserved for acts during the time of the Nazis, Red China, and in a more recent era, ISIS.
“It won’t be too long before they start renaming cities and towns and counties named after Confederates. And I reckon it’s only a matter of time before they bulldoze the Confederate grave yards and war memorials too,” Starnes writes this week, after listing several examples of the Confederate flag being removed.
“Has the Department of Homeland Security classified the Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy as right-wing hate groups, yet?,” he rhetorically asks.
Then the Brooklyn-based frequent Fox & Friends guest tries to blame America’s acceptance of the LGBT civil rights movement for the bipartisan movement over the past eight days that has brought down the Rebel flag from states and stores across the nation.
“Maybe we can just pretend the Civil War never happened,” Starnes whines. “I’m assuming Hollywood will cooperate with the South’s cultural cleansing by eradicating any copies of ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘Forrest Gump.’ Forrest was named after the aforementioned Nathan Bedford Forrest,” he informs his readers.
And then Starnes, who believes “Christians have officially become second-class citizens,” inflicts his frequent anti-gay hate into the conversation.
Speaking of the hit 1980’s TV series “The Dukes of Hazard,” Starnes worries what will happen to the iconic orange 1969 Chevrolet the series’ stars drove that was named for a famous Southern Civil War General.
“I do wonder, though, about those good ole boys from Hazzard County. What are Bo and Luke Duke are going to do with the General Lee?,” he asks.
“Maybe they could just paint a rainbow flag on top and call it the General Sherman,” Starnes suggests. “He culturally cleansed the South, too.”
Of course, the LGBT civil rights movement has nothing to do with “cultural cleansing,” or the nationwide bipartisan grassroots popular movement to remove the Confederate flag from a place of honor and respect in state houses, on license plates, state flags, and in retail stores.Â
Unless one would like to suggest that America has become far more liberal than we used to be, and the liberalism that embraces diversity – which, not coincidentally, Starnes calls “ethnic cleansing” – and equality also abhors racism, oppression, slavery, and hate.
Then fine, Mr. Starnes, blame us all you like.
