A Woman (Finally) Will Be On The Face Of The $10 Bill Says Treasury Secretary

After a grassroots campaign, a woman will be on the face of the new ten dollar bill, says Treasury Secretary Jack Lew.

For the first time in over a century, Americans will see a woman on our national paper currency. 

The ten dollar bill will be redesigned to include a woman, but Secretary Lew notes Alexander Hamilton will remain in some manner.

“America’s currency is a way for our nation to make a statement about who we are and what we stand for,” Lew said. “Our paper bills — and the images of great American leaders and symbols they depict — have long been a way for us to honor our past and express our values.” 

The Treasury Department will take public input before making a decision as to whom will be the first woman since Martha Washington and Pocahontas to appear on paper money.

“We are going to be open to many ideas as we go forward consistent with theme of democracy,” Lew said. “Our thinking is to select a woman who has played a major role in our history who represents the theme of democracy.”

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen had introduced legislation to add a woman on the $20 bill. 

“Today, those voices all across the country calling for the contributions of women to be honored on our paper currency, were heard and now change is happening,” Shaheen said, adding that “young girls across this country will soon be able to see an inspiring woman on the ten dollar bill who helped shape our country into what is today and know that they too can grow up and do something great for their country.”

The first new $10 should be released in 2020.
