The Austrian capital is getting ready for the 60th annual Eurovision contest by lighting up its roadways with pedestrian walk and don’t walk signs that are a bit unique.
If they were looking for a way to brighten up the city and make visiting pedestrians pay attention, Vienna has found a brilliant way. Pedestrians walking about town will now be greeted by walk and don’t walk traffic lights that feature, instead on the traditional stick figure, male and female same-sex couples.
“The campaign is intended to present Vienna as an open-minded city and also to improve traffic safety as the unusual symbols attract the attention of drivers and pedestrians, a spokeswoman for Vienna’s city lighting department said,” according to Reuters. “The city of Vienna will then collate data to see whether the campaign has indeed helped traffic safety, she added.”
