Ruth Bader Ginsburg Marries A Same-Sex Couple, Emphasizes The Word ‘Constitution’

This weekend Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated at the wedding of a same-sex couple, and some say tipped her hand…

It must have been a wedding for the history books.

Shakespeare Theatre artistic director Michael Kahn on Sunday married New York-based interior designer Charles Mitchem at a museum, Washington, D.C.’s  Anderson House in Dupont Circle. The rings were from Harry Winston.

And Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated.

But the real news came this morning, via the New York Times’ Maureen Dowd.

“But the most glittering moment for the crowd came during the ceremony,” Dowd wrote. “With a sly look and special emphasis on the word ‘Constitution,’ Justice Ginsburg said that she was pronouncing the two men married by the powers vested in her by the Constitution of the United States.”

Was she offering a hint at next month’s ruling? Her personal beliefs? Or just being a good-natured sport?
