The Duggars are getting support from many Christian conservatives, only it’s not helping.
While the Duggars and TLC are trying to ride out Josh Duggar‘s sexual molestation firestorm, they are getting support from their fellow Christian conservatives. Mike Huckabee was quick to rush to their defense, and now, Duggar daughter Jessa, who recently married Ben Seewald, has brought in help from her father in law.
Michael Seewald penned a lengthy essay Sunday, quoting Scripture, and offering disturbing excuses.
But first, consider this passage Seewald wrote:
“Though consequences are sometimes necessary and desired to uphold civil society and to bring temporary justice,” he writes, speaking of civil or criminal penalties, “Jesus forgives repentant sinners, real sinners: murderers, thieves, child molesters, homosexuals, self righteous church goers, the proud, liars, scoffers, atheists, hypocrites, and any other sinner or combination of them all.”
Really?

Conservative Christians often claim atheists are immoral because they don’t have the bible or Jesus to guide them, which of course is ludicrous. We don’t need Jesus to tell us right from wrong, and the fact that there is a higher percentage of Christians in prison than in the general population – and the reverse is true for atheists should be proof enough.
But Michael Seewald, in defending Josh Duggar, sees it differently.
“While not all of our sins find a way to manifest themselves externally we all know the corruption that is present in each of our hearts. It is a mercy of God that he restrains the evil of mankind otherwise we would have destroyed ourselves long ago,” Seewald writes.
“Many times it is simply lack of opportunity or fear of consequences that keep us from falling into grievous sin even though our fallen hearts would love to indulge the flesh. We should not be shocked that this occurred in the Duggar’s home, we should rather be thankful to God if we have been spared such, and pray that he would keep us and our children from falling.”
Lack of opportunity or fear of consequences? Really? How about right is right and wrong is wrong, period?
Mark Shrayber writing at Jezebel sees it this way:
No, no it isn’t. For most people, I bet the decision not to molest a child probably doesn’t come down to thinking “I’ll get caught†or “man, I wish I could molest, but there are no kids around. Drat!†And if Jessa’s father-in-law is saying these things out loud now, are any of the Duggar kids (present and future) safe? I don’t know about you, but I’d be mighty concerned by anyone who says that we’d all be out there molesting if we just had the chance.
