Mike Huckabee Tells Christian Hispanics ‘I Don’t Speak Spanish But I Speak Jesus’
Mike Huckabee this week told a group of Christian Hispanics he speaks their language – no, the other one. Except, he really doesn’t.
Mike Huckabee on Wednesday spoke to about 1000 Christian Evangelical leaders at the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC) convention in Houston. While Jeb Bush was the keynote speaker, and his parents, former President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush were on hand to watch, it was Huckabee who made headlines.
“I do not come to you tonight with the ability to speak Spanish,” the former Arkansas governor who today leaked his presidential campaign announcement on Twitter, told the group. “But I do speak a common language. I speak Jesus.”
Huckabee also took a strong stand against same-sex marriage.Â

“I respect the courts, but the Supreme Court is only that – the supreme of the courts. But it is not the Supreme Being…the court cannot change what God has created,” Huckabee said, as he has before, about marriage equality. “It cannot overrule God. When it comes to prayer, when it comes to life and when it comes to the sanctity of marriage, the court cannot change what God has created.”
Huckabee warned “our country’s in trouble because we lost our landmarks of faith,” CNN reports.
He doubled down on his argument that Christian business owners are being “criminalized” when they face legal action for not agreeing to participate in same-sex weddings, an issue that has spurred the recent religious liberty debate in Indiana.Â
“Somebody’s got to be willing to take on the institutions that challenge and threaten our ability to believe as we believe, because when religious liberty is lost, all liberty is lost,” he said.
Heather Digby Parton, writing at Salon, makes the case for why the GOP’s attempts to court Hispanic Evangelicals is largely a waste of time.
