Carly Fiorina Moves Slightly To Separate Herself From GOP Presidential Candidates On Gay Marriage

Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina over the weekend shared a different view on a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage but is it a calculated move against opponents Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, and Mike Huckabee?

In 2010, then running for the U.S. Senate in California against Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer, Carly Fiorina told the Christian Coalition she supported a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

This was, of course, two years after Prop 8 passed, and amid a growing opposition to bans on same-sex marriage as the lines were increasingly growing firmer.

She’s now modified that view – but she still opposes same-sex marriage.

Over the weekend, Fiorina said she would not support a constitutional amendment to “reverse” a likely Supreme Court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage. She then turned the issue into one of religious liberty, stating she hopes America can balance the rights of same-sex couples to accessing equal benefits with the rights of people of faith who oppose marriage equality.

Of course, given that 61 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage, and given that Fiorina has clearly stated she does not, perhaps this is a moderating opportunity for her, and one where she can attract some of Ted Cruz’s supporters. Cruz recently filed a bill to amend the constitution that would allow states to ban same-sex marriage, effectively nullifying a positive Supreme Court decision.

This position also separates Fiorina from Ben Carson, who has repeatedly stated that the president does not have to abide by a Supreme Court ruling that supports same-sex marriage. It also separates her from Mike Huckabee, who similarly and repeatedly has said that any Supreme Court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage does not mean marriage equality is the law of the land.
