Gossip Sites Publish Scare Quote Articles: Barry Manilow ‘Marries’ ‘Male Lover’

It’s 2015. Why would national publications like Radar Online and the National Enquirer publish articles that read like they were written in the 1980s?

When two men get married, they get married. Period. It’s 2015.

Publications that insist on using scare quotes to demean the sacred institution of marriage because the couple are of the same gender are exhibiting an ugly anti-gay bias. Publications that insist on using the term “male lover” show just how backward they are in today’s 21st century.

Today, the National Enquirer ran the story, “WORLD EXCLUSIVE: BARRY MANILOW SECRET GAY WEDDING.”

BARRY MANILOW secretly married his longtime male lover in a ceremony at the couple’s California home last April, The National ENQUIRER can exclusively reveal.

The “Copacabana” crooner said “I do” to Garry Kief, his manager and the president of Barry Manilow Productions, an insider said.

Radar Online, a sister publication of the National Enquirer, subsequently published the article, “Barry Manilow Reportedly ‘Marries’ His Longtime Male Lover — ‘It Was A Total Surprise’.”

Why would Radar put the word marries in scare quotes?

Why would both use the archaic and demeaning term “male lover”?

The wedding, both publications report, took place in Palm Springs, California, where marriages between same gender people are legal.

The Enquirer adds that “the happy duo did not file the paperwork to formalize their union out of fear the big news would leak, sources said.”

If that’s the reason for the scare quotes, why not say, “exchanged vows”?

Both publications are owned by American Media, Inc. The New Civil Rights Movement contacted American Media’s Executive Vice President Christopher V. Polimeni via telephone and email, and we’ll update this report when we receive a response.

Lastly, we wish Mr. Manilow and Mr. Kief all the happiness in the world.
