Win A Free Copy Of One Of The Most Important Books About The LGBT Civil Rights Movement

Michelangelo Signorile’s new book, “It’s Not Over,” launches today. Here’s how you can win a free copy.

Veteran journalist Michelangelo Signorile hasn’t just been writing about the LGBT civil rights movement for decades, he’s been helping to move it forward.

I first met Mike in 2009, about a year after The New Civil Rights Movement launched. Mike graciously invited me onto his SiriusXM radio show to talk about The Great Nationwide Kiss-In, an event I created to respond to the growing number of same-sex couples who were arrested just for kissing in public. At the time it felt like an epidemic, and it was not only ridiculous that it was happening, but these arrests were “illegal,” because there was no law to support them.

Mike was kind and gracious and generous and helpful, and truly interested in what we were doing.

And that’s Mike. Today, not only does he have his SiriusXM radio show, now on their Progress channel, but he’s the editor-at-large of the Huffington Post’s Gay Voices vertical. His editorials are always a must-read, because more than any other journalist today, Signorile consistently espouses the very accurate – even when it doesn’t feel like it – viewpoint that our fight is not over yet.

And that’s the point of his new book, aptly titled, It’s Not Over: Getting Beyond Tolerance, Defeating Homophobia, and Winning True Equality.

As a journalist and an advocate for LGBT and progressive issues, one of my greatest concerns has been that as soon as we win marriage, many LGBT activists, and more worrisome, many LGBT people and allies whose voices have been instrumental in the national conversation to advance equality (if you’re reading this, I’m probably talking about you!), will think it is over, and stop advocating, stop talking, stop demanding.

Mike’s book makes clear, time and time and time again, that we cannot afford to do that.

I’ll be honest: It’s a great read, but even for me, at times it made me uncomfortable, because I have sometimes thought, “Let’s not go after this issue, we’re winning, what’s the point?”

And the point is, the moment we relax, the moment we let conservatives and the religious right get away with anything, is the moment we start to lose.

Our rights are neither guaranteed nor permanent.

Some of them exist thanks to President Barack Obama’s executive orders, but we know that his successor, especially if they are a Republican, can and possibly will void those orders.

This book is, in my opinion, one of the most important books about today’s LGBT civil rights movement.

It’s a must read, and it’s a book I desperately hope everyone gets a chance to read, because we need everyone to continue the fight for equality.

If you think it’s over, you really need to read this book. If you agree it’s not, you should read it anyway and share it with others.

It’s Not Over launches today, and you can buy it now on Amazon, or at your local book store.

Mike has also generously offered to give three lucky NCRM readers a free copy.

Here’s how you can enter to win a copy of It’s Not Over:

First, make sure you have registered your email address at The New Civil Rights Movement.

Second, send us an email [ promotions at thenewcivilrightsmovement.com ] from that registered address, with “It’s Not Over” in the subject line.

That’s it – totally simple.

The “contest” runs from now until Thursday at 6:00 PM ET. If we get your email before then, you are entered. If not, sorry, but go buy a copy of the book anyway – it’s worth it.

Fine print: You will need to have sent us the email from a valid email address you have access to so we can contact you if you win. We’ll need to get your name and mailing address to send you the book. If you win we will share that information with the publisher, who will send you the book.

Full disclosure: The New Civil Rights Movement is not being compensated in any way (unless you click on the link above to buy from Amazon, in which case we’ll make a few pennies, maybe) for this. We just believe in the book and have great respect for Mike Signorile.
