The State of Oklahoma once again demonstrates just how much it doesn’t get the movement supporting LGBT civil rights.
An Oklahoma man who wanted to show his support for his LGBT friends and family members applied for a personalized license plate showing he is an LGBT ally. The plate he requested reads LGBTALY, but the Oklahoma Tax Commission, which issues motor vehicle license plates, denied his request.
John Keefe says the “gentleman who denied it said it was sexual in nature.”
The Oklahoma Tax Commission rules warn “the commission will deny a request if an objective, reasonable person would find that the proposed combination of letters and/or numbers falls into at least one of six categories,” the first being “carries a sexual connotation.”
Keefe, who is not gay, told News9.com exactly how he felt upon being told of the decision.
“I thought that was a load of crap. I thought that was very uneducated, very bigoted, very discriminatory against a population that has long faced an unfair, unethical discrimination.”
Keefe has hired an attorney and is promising to take the case to the Oklahoma Supreme Court if the commission doesn’t grant his request.
Recently, Oklahoma lawmakers have been waging war on their LGBT constituents, with one Republican state senator, Joseph Silk, insisting LGBT people “don’t have a right to be served in every single store.”
